winter tazettas

Thanks John for the photos and reports. Wilf was very proud of Avalex and justifiably so.

Canberra winters are not kind to tazettas.

All considered my Gramon series do pretty well with some protection.

Gramoneed.

Gramonora. This year one stem had 17 florets, which confirmed my suspicion that these hybrids can have higher floret counts in conditions that suit them

When less protected they have much shorter stems.

Bill Welch’s tetraploid tazettas aren’t enjoying the conditions either.

Nor are his tetraploid paperwhites.

My perfect pannizianus 10_01W is very sad.

A pannizianus hybrid with pachybolbus has a longer stem but is still frost damaged. It is obviously miniature here, but perhaps not in a tazetta climate.

A box of 10_03TX Taztep x Virivest is vigorous enough but likewise short stemmed

Perhaps the nicest tazetta at the moment, on a good stem, is 10_03TX’s sibling 10_01TX, arguably 8G-G. Interestingly its scent is mainly that of viridiflorus. It is growing in some shade but is not very protected. It is pictured here with the fernandesii/tazetta hybrid Yaz Tazquil.
